I would like to implement gender tags on discord, I have it on another discord and its VERY useful. Tags could be she/her/ they/them he/him and players could chose one or some combination thereof.
-
I support this! I see no real reason not to implement them, as they are useful to cis and trans people alike :)
-
Will we get canceled if we don't display our tag?

Conform or else, whore.

Yes papa sorry papa

That does bring up an excellent point, perhaps have the gender tags optional for people that might not be comfortable sharing their pronouns or are in a questioning stage of life. Clearly it shouldn't matter, but maybe there are people out there that are transgender and still coming to terms with that and aren't ready.
So maybe have it where you can add your pronoun roles but not have it forced?
-
Pronoun roles are typically always 100% optional
-
Even though I disagree with this if there's overwhelming support I won't say no. However with vc being a free speech server I reserve the right not to call you by "They" or whatever pronoun thing you want to be called by.

This isn’t really for that, it’s just generally useful. I thought Steven was a girl before joining a call with him, and I believe it was Day who thought Octo was a girl there for awhile. You’re still fine to dislike it of course, it’s just not really about that.
-
I personally like this idea, and since we already have a role menu now it is simple to implement. It is 100% optional and has no affect on anyone that wishes to not participate.

i'd like to know how day thought I was a girl lol

I'm all for this personally. It won't effect me by any means and if it helps players feel more comfortable and accepted isn't that what we all should strive for?

If anyone requests them, will we add neopronouns?
-
How would this work exactly? Would there be a list of pronouns to choose from? Would you just be able to write your own in? Do you need Staff to add ones that don't exist? etc
-
Wouldn't it be easier to just add the pronouns to your own Discord nickname like this? (https://i.imgur.com/ffoYUD2_d.webp?maxwidth=640&shape=thumb&fidelity=medium)
Just to be clear; I don't mean this negatively at all and have no problem whatsoever using people's chosen pronouns. But... what's the point in us adding this when you can just add them to your own username from Discord's settings?

I like, seems pretty simple to do, and your nickname for one server wont carry over to any other servers. A lot less effort to make a system to acquire the roles this way!

Oh yeah that's a good idea.

Well staff can make reaction roles to get pronouns automatically, and for the neopronouns it would probably just be easier to ask staff to make a custom role, since not a lot of people use them. We can also use Air's idea since that seemed really simple.

Just don't think I saw anyone use your pronouns for a while, and for some reason I thought your name just sounded more of a girls. Same for Shen when I was younger.

I do worry that this may be a bit cluttered, especially since some people have fairly long names as is. In my experience it’s fairly easy to implement or change role menus if you have a bot like YAGPDB, and since we already have a role menu in #welcome adding pronouns shouldn’t be that difficult.

Yeah I was thinking the same thing, it's very cluttered putting your pronouns in your name, but of course it's welcome. If we had to implement another bot I think it would be a means for concern, but since we already have a bot that can make it seamless I say why not? especially since it's optional
-
We would have so many roles if we made one for each pronoun someone wanted to use. Just change your name.
-
3 roles? She/her, he/him, they/them
Yeah I see some people might want more, but that can be something that is crossed later or as Day said, can be specifically added by a staff member at their discretion.
How is that different then having the roles
Events, Village Weekly, Announcement
and some people like me have all three, while the gender roles someone would only select 1
Certain people already have a ton of roles and it only effects you if you look at it, while changing the name everyone sees and can make some already long names, longer.
Personally it's less flashy to have the roles.
-
I just don't really see the point.
-
I support this, it doesn't sound like its a big ordeal to do and if it makes members of our community feel more welcome, seen and valid, then why not do it.
I understand the proposal of changing your name, and while at first I thought it was a smart alternative, good points have been made against that option - players with long names.
I support this as it doesn't negatively affect anyone, only brings about a positive affect.
And lets not lie, we all could do with more positivity in our lives.
But I'm still open to suggestions and alternative methods of supporting our fellow community members!
-
So the pronoun roles would only be visible if you specifically looked at someone's roles to see what they go by? Is that right? Or is it always displayed somehow?
Air's solution also seems good. Glancing at the list of names, there's not that many that are too long and can't accommodate a few more characters.
I don't really care either way, just looking for the best solution.
-
Yeah roles are only visible if you click on their name in the list on the right, like if you look at mine right now I have CM, Village Weekly, Etc.
doing it as a role is how other discord servers have had it set up so it might make a familiar system to new players. I personally prefer it as a role since it's out of the way visually, but super easy to see if you want to know.
-
I'm all about accepting everyone, I really don't give a shit what people identify as (male, female, transgender, gender neutral, non-binary, etc) I just don't understand this recent trend of NEEDING your pronouns to be public to everyone, I really don't see the point at all.
I find this constant need to label ourselves a bit bizarre, especially when stuff like this is often used as a huge cancel culture weapon (which I quite despise). That's my only issue with this.
That said, if it will actually make people feel more accepted then I'm all for it.

Ah ok, thanks for the clarification. This works then.

Oh, you dont need to, I think the entire idea of this was just to let people have pronoun roles. Although I agree, labels/pronouns are a pain, they make languages harder to learn, and you could misgender people by accident. Dunno why cancel culture is used over this, you won't be canceled for not having them here lol.

It's less so about needing it and feeling accepted, and more about it being convenient, at least in my view of it. Since we're all hiding behind a wall of text, it's difficult to really know what we're supposed to call each other, where in real life this is usually very simple. Much like usernames are an easy way to know what to refer to someone as online, pronoun roles help to know what to call someone in conversation. Again using the example of Kalina mistaking Octo for a girl, it's not at all a transgender-exclusive issue. It's mostly a way to make things less confusing online. That being said, if it *does* make people feel accepted then that's always a bonus as well.
As Kalina said though, I doubt anyone on VC would be cancelled over this issue, haha.

I like the idea of supporting our gay/lesbian/trans/queer/anything friends who often get bullshit insecure people punching down on them. I like the idea of making people feel more welcome. I like the idea of helping people determine who they're talking to in a simple way.
I also understand the worries about cancel culture / virtue signalling / narcissistic bullies co-opting otherwise positive ideas as a means of attacking people, being divisive, and spouting their own hate. I don't really see VC as the kind of place that will happen. If it does, we can all call it out.
Implementing this as Naomi has explained it seems totally harmless and helps anyone interested in doing so. So, I'm cool with it.
