Title: Thoughts/opinions on night skipping
Post by: Noket on 30 December 2023, 08:58:31 AM
Hello! I was hoping to get some opinions on night skipping - whether we should keep it or not, and if we keep it what kind of percentages you guy think would be reasonable to skip the night?

For me, I'm leaning towards like 10-25% of players sleeping should be able to skip the night.

That range seems reasonable enough to me.

I think it's helpful to think about it in terms of how many players online and how many need to sleep for a skip.

At 15%:
1-6 online would need 1 sleeper to skip
7-13 need 2
14-20 need 3
21-26 need 4
etc

At 25%:
1-4 need 1
5-8 need 2
9-12 need 3
13-16 need 4
17-20 need 5
etc

I sorta like 25% because it's easy math and the numbers required are still within reach.

20% might work well too.

At 20%:
1-5 need 1
6-10 need 2
11-15 need 3
16-20 need 4
etc

Yeah I quite like that. 20%

The draft that the Senate are currently working on is posted in the #Senate channel on discord.  The thing to keep in mind, and why we want Parliament's input on it, is that this will be sort of the opposite of what we have now.  The number we decide on will be what's needed to automatically skip the night cycle.  In other words, if it's one person, there won't be any of the "can we all afk" or whatever, one person gets in a bed to sleep and poof - daytime.  So people will have to almost do the opposite if they WANT to have the night for mobs or whatever.  If there's no agreement to have the night and the required number of people sleep, it's gonna skip.

It's just something to think through.

1% option sounds like a dream only needing one person to
hop in bed and if someone’s (afk but not KEKEOSKSKW) it won’t be a problem anymore so others don’t have to stop what they’re doing to tp to a bed or
afk

Perhaps I have the unpopular opinion here, but I don't think a low percentage is the way to go with this. Part of the fun of skipping night is communicating with other players to accomplish skipping. I support moving it down to say 75% though because I remember all the times there would be one person keeping the rest of us from skipping when we want to. If the number of players needed to skip night is too low, if I was a player who didn't want to skip night because I like killing mobs / need mob drops, then I would never be able to enjoy the night. I think it should still have effort to skip, but not the 100% it currently is.

I can accept this take, especially since this change doesn't apply to me (staff, and I'm rarely in survival). I am not fully in touch with what the best option is, so I'll defer to those who are.
I also wonder if a majority would work, 51% in VC's case would cover that.

To be fair, there have been countless times when I have been building and wanting to skip night, asking in chat and recieving no response because people are AFK without having used the /afk command.

Considering this happens while ~3-5 people are online I don't think 75% would help, it's why I'm personally leaning to something like 25-51%, so that you still can communicate with others but also get to build unbothered  :)

We also have a 51% option in the draft bill for majority  :)

I feel some staff might not entirely back a lower number because they are always in creative or fly (I cannot remember a time when a staff member hasn't been), but to players in survival on the ground, building becomes a million times more tedious. How do we "village craft" with this constant nuisance disturbing our esteemed builders.

I agree with the 51% option. Unlike most servers, 5-10 people is a very normal number of players for VC. So, as Day mentioned, it can be a major struggle trying to skip night when just a couple people happen to be afk or not paying attention to chat. I don't think people are hunting mobs at night nearly as frequently as people are working on building considering that this is a village-based server, so it would help out a lot of people to simply be able to skip night with as little friction as possible.

I like 51%, honestly I kind of like 50 better, but it's minor enough that it doesn't matter. Any server I've been on that lets a majority skip the night has been a better experience on my end.

I also like 50/51 percent, and would even be fine with 25%.  On VCV we have single-player night skipping, and that does require you to say "hey can we not skip night this time" when you don't want to skip.  However, anything in the 50ish percentile would still be much better than the 100% we currently have, without going too far towards the other direction.
