Theodorf -> Resigned

AMICABLY RESIGNED

Good Morning everyone!

I would like to take a moment to remind everyone this is a restriction, not a ban. You still get to use your farms if this is passed, it is only closing farm use when the server is at higher capacity, which is where we see the most lag visually. I know this is a touchy subject but this rule is not to ruin anyone's gameplay. It is an attempt to help players in times we see the most lag.
well, it's already ruined my gameplay, which is why I'm not playing as of right now.

How can something that isn't even in effect ruin your game play? This makes no sense.

And even if it does come into effect, you can still do your thing if under 10 ppl are on. And it's only until the next update.

Another thing to add is that you clearly don't care about if other people's gameplay is ruined or not Octo, which is the whole point of this regulation -- a means to cut down lag for other players on the server. But for some reason you repeatedly tell players that your gameplay is already ruined by a regulation that hasn't even passed yet, that will rarely be in effect ALL WHILE expecting players to care about your experience when you don't give a fuck about theirs. Backwards as fuck man.

5
This is probably one of the funniest threads with the amount of petty ass drama over a small restriction on large automated farms to see whether they reduce lag or not.

Come on now, guys.  :-*

6
While this regulation is well thought out and covers most of the issues, it is just that, a cover. It is simply a stop-gap that will mask the underlying issue without properly resolving the actual problems that are present.

I know this doesn't entirely affect me nor will it change the way I personally play, but this regulation is not only time-consuming to enforce but also piles on more that a staff member would have to do the moment they log in. If I am wrong in this regard, then please do correct me but what would your routine as staff be once this regulation is in place? If you are following it, most likely you will spend the beginning of every play session teleporting from player to player to make sure they are not using a farm. Not only this but can any player soundly estimate the size and scale of a farm without pulling out worldedit or block counting the border? I don't mean to knock anyone's abilities, those are just questions I would ask myself if I was still staff. This creates a tedious and laborious task for both players and staff, the latter who already have much to deal with outside of essentially perma-spying on random players.

Bringing back the mention of existing problems, wouldn't the previously mentioned regulation on prices have a similar effect on the use of farms?

Completely crashing the price for valuable and easily farmable items would make it worthless to create and actively farm any of these resources as they would be no better than earning pennies for the hour. And yes, that would be the pricing I would implement. Either kill the revenue of these farms to deter most of their usage or utterly flip the market and remove the ability to sell these items to the market. Both will have the same effect, I am sure. Both in regards to the immediate effect as well as the public outcry. Even so, this would either push players who farm back to actually playing the game in other ways or they will quit. It is a harsh reality and decision but something that should have been considered the moment massive scale projects were created. The player can still make money outside of creating such farms, it is simply more effort and less afk.

Of course, this is my opinion and perhaps my opinion alone but something of this magnitude is necessary to reinvigorate the worth of money on the server. There is no real economy since anything can be bought after a short moment of farming any of the publicly or privately available areas. There is no proper sense of where it should stop and it has become more about who tops the balance charts or who has the best and most efficient farms to make this money.

While this is only a single step towards a change, it doesn't have to nor should it be the only step taken to change the way things are seen, earned, and implemented.

Feel free to rip this apart,

-Random player opinion.

I wholly agree with this. The economy has never been in a healthy state and has been in shambles the past several years since VC gained popularity. While this isn't the discussed topic at hand, the issues with the current system are egregious. Enforcing a regulation to the sale of these farmed items by making them economically nonviable is another direction to go with these farms. As it stands farms are causing more problems than just lag. This would solve the lag issue and also another major flaw in the VillageCraft economy. The current system promotes mindless farming while making these players untouchable as they can buy nearly everything from market while we punish our players that actively participate in the community with very little margins of profit that pale in comparison. We should move toward a discussion about reworking the economy in another thread but I definitely think it is another issue that needs to be visited in the upcoming weeks.

7
You all sound so whiny when the rest of the player base clearly experiences this lag when farms are in use. Luis' investigation shows proof that it causes much more fluctuation for 1.14 at these farms, which is what induces the rubber banding that is a majority of the community's complaints.

In my opinion, the regulations are very light as I would have liked to see the number of required players to regulate farms drop down lower to around 5. This is an extremely fair compromise and it only lasts till 1.16 AND punishment is very light on offenders. No farms are getting seized or broken the community is just asking these players using these large farms to think about them and quit being so self interested while we try to figure out ways to cut down lag for the time being.

The amount of crying or incessant whining over fucking minecraft farms couldn't be anymore pathetic. I get it, the mind blowing feeling of standing there AFK while you ruin everyone else's experience is just too good to pass up. But please, quit being so selfish and listen to other people's complaints about not being able to play. It's absurd that these AFK players, represented by mostly staff, have gone this long with clear favor while the other players have gotten screwed until someone decided to speak up.

Farms can still be used according to these regulations, it's just asking that large farm users do this at a time where it won't affect every other player. So please, stop whining about it ruining your player experience. We don't care, just as you are constantly ignoring the concerns about our experience being riddled with constant lag, we don't care how much it ruins your fun -- you have already lost that respect.

General Discussion / Re: Building Competition Vote!

People that are interested will work just fine. I know that tenretni, Naomi, and myself are all interested in being judges. Other people could include Frog, Essos, or other esteemed builders. It's good to have a large variety of judges with different specialties so a well rounded opinion on the build can be formed as opposed to it losing because it's one style or the other. Also instead of having the whole group of judges all individually vote on one plot, if we select 2-3 judges then we could easily avoid the issue that comes with having contestants as judges, since their build submission will not be voted on by them but rather the other qualifying judges. This will allow us to easily choose players, in or out of the competition, that show their interest in being a judge.

10
Nobody is regulating for the sake of regulation. Respectfully, you haven't played enough to experience the nearly unplayable lag spikes during peak times lately, and the widespread frustration that led to this long, painful discussion and now to this.

Completely in favour of this rule as is written in the OP, but with the stipulation of a review upon update to 1.16

I second this

For the next build battle it would be a lot cooler to have judges that will remain impartial that grade off of certain criteria/categories like creativity, color, detail, story, and atmosphere.

We could randomly pick judges or pick them based off their ability to build. The process would be a lot more interesting and competitive as the judges will thoroughly work through each plot and individually grade with a rubric as opposed to the system now where players are likely to just vote for their friends without reviewing the ins and outs of every build in the contest. After all judges are finished reviewing a plot you sum all of the grades for each category (1-5, 5 being best) and the plot and player with the highest score wins.

Perhaps the repercussions should scale before outright disabling the farm. It would probably be best not to ban players that offend repeatedly, but a temporary region seizure could be in order.

Would something like this work?:

First offence - kick & warning;
Second offence - kick & warning;
Third offence - disablement;
Fourth offence - temp seizure of region.

It may also be prudent to include a clause where if the person was there afking before player count reached 5, then whatever action is taken isn't counted against them? As much as I like this rule, I don't want my farm seized over the fact that I was afk when 4 other people joined

True, just wanted some scalability to make sure that it's not too hard on people that are first offenders. I guess the 4th offence punishment is a bit harsh.

I disagree that the 4th offence is harsh, if you get to the 4th offense you are obviously ignoring the regulation so you should be punished. Otherwise we will still see everyone using farms as usual if we give them a slap on the wrists. Seizure of the region is a perfect punishment because it doesn't limit you from still playing VillageCraft (like a ban would) and renders the farm useless.

Parliament | Suggestions / Re: Farms Causing Lag?
« on: 16 April 2020, 03:10:55 AM »
To begin I absolutely love your mature response to players concerns:
That being said, I've noticed a lot of childish arguments discussion about if farms should be banned, which brings me back to the point I'm trying to make in this post. I did some simple tests, and here are the results.

This comes off of as condescending. I understand you do a lot for the server in the background, working with all of its frustrating code and plugins and everything and sure you may understand a lot of what is going on more than the average VC player but you are human and you do miss things. Just because you know how to code does not mean you are always totally right on anything server related.

Luis, while you did run these tests on a VC clone to "prove" that farms don't cause a consistent TPS dip, that doesn't completely let farms off the hook. For one, a massive problem I see with the tests conducted is that a consistently low TPS or high fluctuations in TPS are most observable at peak hours -- when we have many players on the server. In your tests you don't mention taking into account multiple players being on the server so I am assuming your tests are with a sole player (you) on the test server. Obviously, this isn't a very good way to measure whether or not we should implement a rule to limit farm use when a certain amount of players are on -- in fact it doesn't do anything to prove that it wouldn't help with lag. A proper test of this clone server would have around the same number of players that are on during peak hours when we have these issues. While these results can help you narrow down what the lag may be it does not mean that other forms of data are to be ignored.

The anecdotal evidence from a large majority of players that claim to experience lag when OctoGamer gets on (presumably spawning at his farm) has been dismissed routinely when referring to this issue. While it isn't numerical data that you can graph and find the mean or deviation, IT IS data. Player feedback should not be ignored. It means there is something that your tests obviously aren't picking up on that deals with Octo's farm that OTHER players experience constantly and that should be looked into. A lot of the frustration that caused these "childish arguments" is that in general the ones protecting farms are both staff and owners of large farms and always claim that it isn't the issue when everyone else is experiencing the effects. As the lead programmer/administrator of the server it is your job to listen to people's frustrations and not immediately dismiss them, as this can guide you to a better understanding of the problem at hand. It's likely that these complaints from players are valid and way you are handling data recording prevents you from seeing these issues.

The question shouldn't be about what effect farms have on a laggy server, it should be why is the server lagging in the first place. I'm not too worried about those fluctuations, my goal here is to try and figure out why the TPS is 12-15 during peak times. If I can solve that, then it will have a knock-on benefit which will be very noticeable. If we ban farms during peak hours, the TPS will still be lower than it should, and that's the problem we should be focusing on.

The community's argument isn't that farms are severely slowing down the server consistently but rather the extreme fluctuations that cause rubber banding and make VillageCraft unplayable. Why are fluctuations not an issue? Yes, the big picture is to solve the overall lag problem that the server has, but that doesn't mean we should ignore solutions to make the server a little more playable. Waiting until you figure out the big mystery to the lag isn't doing us much of anything when players constantly feel the effects of large farms on the already laggy server that SHOULD be a priority to lessen. Your data doesn't include any of the many large pumpkin farms on VC which is interesting as this is the most prevalent large automated farm on VillageCraft with many players owning them. It would prove to be a good idea to do some tests on these massive pumpkin farms that are much bigger and have way more redstone than these other large farms though I understand these are not the farms in question that have been constantly complained about by the community.

I'd appreciate it if you all stopped arguing over this and speculating as to what you think is causing the lag, and just let me actually try and solve it using the data I have.

You are speculating just as much as the players are. You aren't getting anywhere, and there hasn't been results for the time that this issue has been around. I don't see why there is any issue with doing a small change to limit large farms until we move toward a permanent solution when you DO happen to solve the underlying problems. It is obviously causing noticeable lag for many players including myself and I find it ridiculous that you so vehemently deny that it could be causing the issue that players are experiencing. I say we vote on this somewhat quickly so it doesn't get swept to the side like it has been for awhile now. That way if the community is wrong, the change can be reverted and crossed off the list as being an issue causing the lag -- and if the community is right -- it will heighten the current experience on VillageCraft by limiting the amount of rubber-banding and skipping when large farms are functioning in high player counts.

btw Octo I'm not targeting you, you are just the prime example everyone refers to when arguing against large farm usage

Reports & Grievances / Re: Staff Abuse from Theodorf
« on: 6 April 2020, 01:12:16 AM »
Hi,

Thanks for the report. I can see that I overstepped my bounds, and during my recent reappearance, this definitely isn't a first. I have repeatedly acted very immature with the permissions I am given and, at times, clearly crossing the line. I have needlessly harassed players and been a general ass in the past few weeks that I have returned. I'm sorry that you had to get caught up in all of this, it was 100% wrong for me to use my staff abilities to infiltrate your base and proceed to antagonize you even when you asked to leave. You deserve better, and the serve deserves better. My presence isn't needed, the wonderful community is handling everything smoothly and our new staff members are sure to continue that onward. I have been on VC for a long time, in total 8 years, but that doesn't make this type of behavior excusable. Through the few weeks I have started to realize I am adding nothing to this server but harm and hurting it's established strong community led by a few who are absolutely dedicated to the server. It is unfair for me to continue my time on VillageCraft as a staff member as I have repeatedly proven to be a nuisance and a detractor rather than a helpful resource.

I hereby resign from my position on VillageCraft's staff team and I would hope others do not take their fleeting horrible experience with my behavior as a representation of the community or it's dutiful administration. This is a fantastic server with a resilient and strong community that refuses to die and I don't see that changing any time in the future. I apologize to those who have endured my harassment or abuse while I have been on, and I'm extremely sorry for ruining VillageCraft for you. A lot of you are my friends and I wish you all the best and hope for the server to last until the very end.

Good luck to Yvette, Luis, Frog, Sax, Legend, and Cyphur -- VC is in good hands with you all around. Sorry for being a dick.

So this is an arena game?

Yes, typically VC UHC is held in an arena so matches don't go on forever. If you have any ideas of what you would like to see in this UHC don't hesitate!

In this case, this sounds like it could be a fun event/game that players could partake in. I like the idea, even though I'm not  PVPer myself, I think having arena games like this is good. Although I wouldn't support unbanning players for this, as if a player is banned it is normally for good reason, and they should only be unbanned if their temp banishment has ended, or they have successfully appealed to staff. Otherwise, I really like this idea!

VC UHC isn't hosted on the main VC server, so banned players won't be welcomed back to the actual VillageCraft server. Therefore I see no problem in welcoming the banned back to get their asses kicked by real VillageCraft members. Anyone you hate? Beat them in UHC and you now hold all the marbles.

Oh ok, which server will it be held on, perhaps I missed that.

It was held on VCV in previous years, but that server no longer exists so we will have to work something out. But I can 100% say it will not be held on the main VC world that you know and love.

So... you're all locked up in your house and told "stay at home" by your pesky government or your terrible mother.

:/ :/ :/ :/ :/

You've bit the bullet and decided maybe Minecraft wasn't so bad after all and return to that server you've built countless memories until the "pandemic" dies down and life resumes as you know it. But what if before you go back to your boring life -- before you go back to boring school, boring work, boring friends...

You partake in something amazing.

Let us use this chaos outside as a reunion of all VillageCraft players, old and new, to organize a mind-bending session of UHC. For those of you that live under a rock, UHC stands for Ultra Hardcore, meaning a game mode where YOU DO NOT REGENERATE HEALTH unless you use potions/golden apples. It will be a PVP DEATHMATCH with either individuals or teams pitted against each other in an arena. The Victor takes home the coveted UHC Tag and their balls a little bigger. So what do you say? DURING THIS QUARANTINE LET'S PLAY!

Worried about banned players coming back? The event itself will be held on a separate server from the main VillageCraft server. This means you can completely destroy your worst enemy even if they aren't welcomed onto VillageCraft. VC UHC REBOOT: QUARANTINE Edition will take place on a date decided by YOU. Should we get enough momentum you can expect an exact date in the coming weeks!

Spread the word! Got friends that used to play VillageCraft but think Minecraft is lame now? Let them know how stupid they are and that they should be competing for the most prestigious award in Minecraft History. I want normal players, I want donators, I want staff members, I want the oldest of old that you would never expect, I want the banned, I want the loved, I want the hated, I want Air, I want Die, I want the newest of souls... I WANT EVERYONE TO PLAY THIS ROUND OF UHC. There are no excuses.

So what are you waiting for? Invite your closest VC friends and tell them to invite their VC friends for this colossal event!

If you are interested in VC UHC REBOOT: QUARANTINE EDITION please indicate in a post below and don't forget to vote in the poll above so we can gather enough momentum to make this thing happen.  8)

Additionally, today I did perform a ban to all players on for a temporary 5 minutes in order to utilize World Edit capabilities for the server. Unfortunately, as you know, the server isn't running too well right now, and, well, that stays true for simple commands such as trying to move a house to another place. [...] but I found it to be the only way to proceed without crashing the server and disturbing Luis for the fourth time that day.

I'm not going to get involved in this, but I'd say if possible try to avoid banning people to use WE unless it's essential. If it can wait, I'd suggest waiting until the server is a little quieter.

Also, don't worry about bothering me. That's why I'm here, it's my job to fix the server when it goes wrong. I'm almost always around, and if not, I'll generally fix it as soon as I see it

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the worldedit was causing the server to hang, so they did the tempban to try to save it from crashing, I think unsuccessfully.

To start, I've been on this server a long time, and during that period of time I have a lot of relationships with a lot of the players/staff that you see me starting shit with. I've known a lot of them to the point where we just mess around with each other like that. The staff that you see me antagonize are just some of my friends I have gotten to know over the years. Additionally, today I did perform a ban to all players on for a temporary 5 minutes in order to utilize World Edit capabilities for the server. Unfortunately, as you know, the server isn't running too well right now, and, well, that stays true for simple commands such as trying to move a house to another place. I understand your frustration of my actions but I am here to assure you it is all a persona, or not necessarily classified as "abuse". I'm truly apologetic for temporarily disabling player's, including you, ability to join Village Craft but I found it to be the only way to proceed without crashing the server and disturbing Luis for the fourth time that day.

I hope this clears everything up and thank you for dutifully maintaining an abuse-free administration. It truly makes our server a better place.
