Reports & Grievances / Re: Crimes at Lilac Lake
« on: 3 February 2022, 03:11:59 AM »
In accordance with the posted ruling, I am making this post formally apologize to TinyTinaJoon. I should not have destroyed my house in Lilac Lake using TnT. Staff powers should not be used to detonate explosives in areas where they are not allowed, and I should not have done that. Going forward, I will not be using staff powers to permanently destroy houses in people's villages unsanctioned. Furthermore, I understand and accept the five-day ban and the other resolutions reached by the rest of staff. I acknowledge that blowing up that house was wrong, and I will not do it again. My apologies to Tina and anyone else that got mixed up in this mess.

Ban/Punishment Appeals / Re: I got banned :'( (salishseasalt ban appeal)
« on: 14 November 2021, 10:34:13 PM »
Between discussion here and discussion in other staff communication channels, the general consensus is that your appeal in its current state is not adequate. You have failed to properly address the reason for your ban, failed to respect the rules of proper appeals, and failed to generally demonstrate that you deserve in the slightest to be unbanned from villagecraft.

The majority of staff believe you should stay banned. As such, Your appeal has been denied. You may retry in three months.

This thread will be locked after 24 hours, given no reasonable objections to the verdict.

Ban/Punishment Appeals / Re: X raying
« on: 20 October 2021, 08:46:42 PM »
I'm going to let the fact that your appeal completely misses the appeal guidelines slide for now, and address what I think you are trying to appeal. (In the future though, please follow the Appeal Guidelines)

You did x-ray resources. Based on your mining tunnels, it seems like quite a bit of ore. However, as Octo has pointed out, determining precisely how many resources were x-rayed is not an easy process. Figuring out how they were used is even harder. In my opinion, having to replace your gear, regardless of if you x-rayed the resources required to make it, is your x-raying punishment. The day's ban was more about giving you a chance to remove your x-ray mods, and giving me a chance to clean up.

I've seen people get banned for longer than a month for less severe offenses than x-ray (Not necessarily on VillageCraft). Hell, some SMP servers will outright perm ban you for x-ray. It's a serious offense, but you were very honest about it. As such, I think instead of not being able to play VillageCraft for a month or longer, your punishment is that you may continue playing, but you will have to spend the time to replace the gear you lost. If you play often, that might mean it happens pretty quickly. In my opinion, this is a fair alternative. Furthermore, I did supply you with some iron tools so that you wouldn't be starting at the complete bottom of the Minecraft tech tree, and you still have your established base, and whatever is in your /bal, so you certainly aren't starting from nothing at all.

If more staff would like to weigh in on if this is a fair alternative, and if we should replace some or all of the gear, please do. I know Necati and Proper have been playing for a while, that's part of why I opted for an alternative punishment to a longer temporary ban.

I'll get some hate for this, but pineapple and pepperoni. Something about the sweet and salty work really well together.

What is the next poster's favorite YouTube channel?

I can respect pineapple and pepperoni. I kinda enjoy pineapple on pizza myself (not often) so I cant really complain.

3Blue1Brown is a god-tier YT channel if you're into nerdy math stuff.

My less nerdy favs for a general audience are classics like Bill Wurtz or SethEverman. If you want something educational SciShow or Tom Scott are also good channels to stop by.

I honestly can't pick one single favorite, right now it's 3Blue1Brown but maybe next week I'll be in a more Alan Becker mood. (also god-tier if you've never seen it)

So, because I like weird nerdy things, What is the next poster's favorite key on the keyboard? There's a lot to pick from! (any and all keys allowed, even F24 if it's your jam.)

Alternative questions if you can't pick a key:
Favorite unit of measurement (of anything!)
Favorite material
Favorite wavelength of light (if you can't think of anything for any other question, just look up your favorite color's wavelength in google "<color> wavelength")

I love chopping trees, deforestation is my minecraft passion.

I have to agree with Cyphur here that while a tree feller would be easier, there would be no forests left because I won't stop and making it easier will just extend my love of chopping trees.

If there is big interest in it I recommend having a separate resource world that players can go tree fell to their hearts content and not destroy the historic landscape of VC
I get what you mean with the separate world thing i've seen some servers have that but with the not being anymore forests is just not possible, minecraft has infinite generation meaning that theres no way to chop ALL the forests, now i wont underestimate you so maybe you would just chop all the trees within your region but the chopping thing just is not a valid reason to be against this plugin in my opinion and i understand what cyphur is saying so i came up with some sort of solution, like if you mined enough wood you would be able to break 2 at a time then 3 then 4 then 5 and so on making it so you actually have to put in some effort and you cant just insta-mine a whole forest like its nothing

The Naomi chopping down all the forests thing was half meant as a joke, but to address your counterargument: The Minecraft world is, strictly speaking, not infinite. There are lots of limitations causing this, ranging from programming limitations (numbers can only get so big) to file size limitations (a theoretical max generated Minecraft world is on the order of petabytes IIRC).

As for your suggested solution, I've never heard of a plugin that lets you do that, and I am really not in the mood, position, or inclination to custom code a solution. We could ask Luis to do it, but Luis currently has several other server-related projects listed down, A server to help administrate, and above all, a life to live outside of VillageCraft (I hear he does some really cool stuff). I don't think it would be a good idea to stack another stone onto that metaphorical mountain.

I maintain that as far as balanced tree felling style plugins go, MCMMO did it best. MCMMO's system rewards players for investing in the woodcutting skill with a powerful ability enabling one to fell a few trees quickly. The skill is not infinite, and has a recharge time, limiting its use. This is not to say MCMMO is a perfect plugin by any stretch of the imagination, just that their implementation of the woodcutting skill is good.

Looking at this plugin's bukkit page, I notice that it says that it is out of date and not to use it. So that's a good reason to be against it already. However, let's consider the idea of a tree chopping plugin in and of itself:

I think a tree chopping plugin, such as the Timber plugin wouldn't be a good fit for VillageCraft. My biggest issue is I honestly think they make the game too easy. One of the great things you can do in Minecraft is fell a jungle giant, the largest tree in the game. To that end, it takes time and investment. It's not a four-block-chop & done situation like many tree-felling plugins make it. You need to either glide to the top and chop all the way down, or chop up the tree in a spiral, then at the top reverse and go back the way down, cleaning up the missed logs. I think it's good to require some significant investment of time to gathering an equally significant amount of wood.

On another note, In discussions with Naomi, one of the most prolific forest removers on the server, she has expressed in the past that if VillageCraft were to have some form of tree cutting plugin, it is unlikely there would be many forests left in the world, as she would happily chop them all down to pass time.

Also as far as timber plugins are concerned I do NOT recommend the timber plugin I linked earlier in this post. It was used purely for example. Due to some poor coding on the author's part, it ignores worldguard and the like and should not be used.

When considering tree felling I think the best implementation of it I've seen is tree felling in MCMMO, as it is a good way to allow tree felling, while not making it overpowered. Firstly you need to grind a high enough woodcutting to be able to use the skill. Secondly, it's not on all the time, it's an activated ability, meaning you can activate it, chop down 1 or two trees, and back to chopping the traditional way. I think this method is much better, as it puts reasonable limits on chopping down entire trees at once.

General Discussion / Re: Why is Octo Staff?
« on: 20 February 2021, 06:43:54 PM »
I wasn't planning on getting any more involved with this, but I was name dropped so I guess I got dragged in.

With regards to the server crash, I don't really see that as him not doing his job. Yes, I am typically the one to restart the server when it crashes; I have a system running which notifies me within 30 seconds if the server is down. However even with that rapid notification, I don't always restart it immediately, because of the reasons Mali said. We can be looking at something else, getting a drink, on the phone, etc, which means it can sometimes take us a little bit to restart it. One potential thing that happened is both Yvette and Octo saw the other was online, and thought the other was going to restart it. From those logs it seems Octo was in-game and Yvette was the first to say it crashed, it would be entirely reasonable in my eyes for either to assume the other was sorting it. Or, even if not, maybe one of them was already fixing it and just didn't say that's what they were doing in the chat? I know I do that more times than not. Regardless, the server came back up in 10 minutes, which I understand is inconvenient, but it's also a pretty quick response from anyone. I know for a fact that with some major crashes, it can take the server >10 minutes to acknowledge you've told it to restart, so it could definitely have ended up being longer than it was.

With regards to the new spawn, I've tried to stay out of commenting on that publicly too much, although if I remember correctly at the time work was started without a vote, as Octo said. While there's nothing I can do to stop people doing what they want, I would personally have liked to see some sort of agreement on that, be it an indicative vote or even an internal staff vote, before starting such a drastic change, but I know I'm very much in the minority with regards to the whole spawn issue so I've learned not to bother speaking up about it, because it won't make a difference regardless. As for the gold thing, as far as I know that was not discussed prior to being created, and in fairness selling anything with metadata in showcases can be iffy sometimes, especially with things as complex a shulker boxes (there's a reason they don't work in backpacks). Regardless, shulker boxes work as an extended inventory now so the need for that specific showcase is no longer. Whether that ability remains beneficial when the dynamic market comes is a question for another day. For both these points, I think a lot of the disagreement between people arose from the apparent unilateral action to do them at the time (which I was also not a fan of), whereas in the past decisions like that had generally had more agreement within staff prior to being done, rather than in small conversations which were then taken as a decision

I'd like to clarify I'm not trying to start conflict with any of that, much of what I said was a probably poorly-worded personal opinion, which I typed while still in the process of waking up

As one of the people who has been and is still working on the ongoing revamp to the new player experience, I think I am qualified to weigh in on why we built the spawn revamp when we did. The group that was working on it was fully under the impression that the new spawn may not get accepted by everyone else. Our hope was that by building something truly amazing that addresses numerous problems with the current spawn, we can show it to people and say "look how much better spawn could be" as opposed to merely suggesting "we change spawn" which has been a trio of words said many times before we started considerations for the project, to no avail. By showing a better spawn, as opposed to suggesting that a better spawn be built, we hoped our actions would speak volumes to the people on how much more amazing we could make the new player experience.

Because we knew there would be some pushback, we selected a region of qualia that up until that point, had gone unutilized, and I believe that had we not used it as the location for the potential new spawn, would still be unutilized today. The hope was that by using otherwise unused ground, we could avoid concerns about changing the existing spawn, as for our implemented change to actually see use, the spawn location would have to be moved from its current area to the new one. We did our best to be responsible about changing spawn, as the first impressions the server makes on a player are the most important.

So while yes, the decision to start the new spawn construction was made without a staff vote, we started it with the knowledge that things may not pass, though we would do our best to ensure that it woud; and we started it with considerations for those who did not believe in the project in the same way we did, and might be worried about changing spawn.

General Discussion / Re: New Debate: What is the Best Minecraft Block
« on: 14 February 2021, 05:07:46 AM »
I believe that the hands down best block in minecraft is as follows:

net.minecraft.block.Block

It is every block and no block at the same time. Every block in the game will exend this class, making it the root of all we hold dear about Minecraft. It is Cyan Wool, It is Diamond block, it is dirt, it is stone, it is EVERYTHING. Clearly there is no other block in the entirety of the net.minecraft package that is its equal. Without net.minecraft.block.Block, Minecraft itself is nothing.

General Discussion / Re: A Couple of Maybe Cool Ideas
« on: 25 January 2021, 07:42:10 AM »
I think Qualia is not the issue with a spawn, I just think the spawn Tunnel is confusing and a bit out of the way. I think if we chose a location more central to market, since that is where a majority of players spend their time in Qualia, along with a Tutorial Chicken it could help new players not be so lost in the early days. I myself try to help out as much as I can but as Gerritt said it can be a lot explaining it over and over again and this easier tutorial system would take more work off of Staff and Players shoulders. I like keeping spawn in Qualia, but change it to a more user-friendly interface.

As far as moving spawn goes I think the new spawn that has been sitting in the south quadrant is a great candidate. Ten and I were there the other day planning out how the new player spawn experience might go in this space.

I think it's best to avoid situating spawn in/near the main market for a few reasons.
Firstly, the number of dropped_item entities in the market is staggering (all the showcases) and can cause clientside lag, not the best impression we want to leave on a new player. (First impressions make or break the "sale")
Secondly, the market is huge and sprawling, as well as being both confusing and a bit of a chore to navigate if you don't know all the warps, let alone without later game tools like elytra and epearls.

The new spawn I think solves these issues handily with the Qualia Minimart, a significantly pared-down version of the market that stocks a number of things useful to new players. The spawn is far enough away that the qualia market doesn't load, and it's small enough to be easily navigable on foot. I think adding a fast-travel portal to the main mart, tucked away so as to not distract from the minimart, and a separate "qualia market" tutorial animal that shows common materials and various warps would be significantly more player-friendly than dropping new players in the market directly.

To address the idea of multiple spawns, I think that the idea of a player first randomly spawning in one of a few possible villages is problematic at best, as it means making multiple tutorials, one for each spawn point, god forbid we want to change them in the future. It also can generate some confusion with players, especially if multiple players arrive as a group intending to play together, or friends invite friends to join. I think a more balanced solution would to make the outlands warp balloon in the new spawn take you to one of these random fixed spawn points and make the main spawn the new spawn w/ qualia minimart. This allows players to easily find their footing in the starter villages, provides a consistent tutorial experience for every player, and allows players who invited friends to easily find and meet up with them.

As for the old spawn tunnel, ten proposed to me an idea I quite liked that would allow us to preserve OG player nostalgia while not detracting from the new player experience. In short, we would keep the spawn tunnel in its current location relative to the new spawn (in the back of the pub), but haphazardly block it off in a way that still kinda allows passage, to serve as an easter egg for the older players. New players would spawn in the entrance to the pub, with clear signposting suggesting they walk out and explore the world, helping discourage new players from checking out the old spawn tunnel until they've had a chance to get properly acquainted with the server. This also can help build that "urban explorer" feeling when checking out qualia that makes it so much fun to investigate.

I like the idea of the plugin, i personally think anyone should be able to have a pet should this be voted on.

As much as I hate the rest of their monetization model, it might be nice to take a leaf out of the mineplex book, and have "tiers" of pets.

e.g: Anyone can have some basic pets, like cats/dogs, and higher ranks can get different, cooler pets, like mini ender dragons or withers (if the plugin has them), or even some custom pets if the plugin supports them, and someone is willing to make them.

In regards to the mob protection thing, when I logged on I got ambushed by pillagers in the middle of the village, I assumed cyphur took off mob protection cause cyphur’s name came up when I was logging around.

4. Are the horses still alive? If so, where are they? If they were killed, who killed them?

Logblock logs this stuff, accessible through the /lb lookup command.

Using the command /lb lookup area 1000 kills entity horse since 360d
I can look up horse kills within a 2000 block sided cube centered on me, in the past 360 days.

These are the results (click to expand):

Thus, presumably they are still wandering around outside the village.

In fact, I found 6 already tamed horses, one of which was named, in the field behind the trapdoor-walled house. I saddled them up, collected them, and moved them to the pen in the top of the above screenshot.

These kind of emails can get sent out for a variety of reasons. However, it should go without saying that if you haven't already taken up Mojang on the suggestion to change your password, I would strongly recommend doing so. It is possible your email (and possibly a version of your password) was leaked in a data breach, and a person with malicious intent took a list of emails/passwords from a data breach and crosschecked them against Minecraft.

In any case, I would take your email and enter it into this website: https://haveibeenpwned.com/. It checks emails against an extensive database to see if its been found in a data breach. If it is found I would strongly recommend changing passwords on most of your accounts, especially if you use the same/similar password(s) across multiple accounts. This advice really goes for anyone reading this thread. Stay safe on the internet everybody!

To respond to the claims regarding me:

Cyphur removed my $100,000 mob protection.

I am a moderator. I literally cannot do this.

I had a pen of about 15 horses, some had diamond armor and most had saddles, Paste and Cyphur let the horses out & stole the armor & saddles.

I did NOT touch your horses. You might be thinking of someone else.

They’ve also tried to log into my account for god knows what, I assume they were gonna give themselves owner perms and loot from my account or something.

Do you have any proof of this? At all?

Flying Fury! Soar around the arena with your elytra, dodging your opponent's arrows while trying to hit them yourself. First person set ablaze loses the match

Is this like a tournament sort of thing with 1v1s?

Yes.

27
So I figured discussion of whether or not these would work is pointless w/o data, so I loaded up all the datapacks (but not plugins) in my paper testing server to test them. Here are the results:

1) RPG Loot

As expected, the generated structures had little to no regard for worldguard regions, and also completely overwrote existing terrain (a vanilla dungeon), as indicated by this screenshot

Given the evidence, I would give this plugin a pass.

Conclusion: Problematic

So after some further investigation, I think I have gathered enough evidence to quite decisively say this datapack will never be added. The reasons for this datapack are not to be added are as follows:

1: Overwrites Existing Structures
2: Overwrites Bedrock
3: Overpowered (From one dungeon alone I got 18 diamonds, far above the "price of entry", not counting other loot)
4: Disregards WorldGuard
5: This one being a recent, serious, discovery, the datapack can be used to quite effectively crash the server. Should one fill a chest with the "ancient excavator" picks, wait sufficient time for server backup, then break it, the server becomes unresponsive when it tries to generate all 27 Dungeons. I had to find the PID and kill it instead of the traditional /stop command. Furthermore, when the server reloads, the chest is still there, meaning one can quite easily break it again, causing the crash all over again.

So I do believe this datapack is a quite definitive NO.

Also @luisc99, can you give me a list of all the recipes you think are problematic in the advancements and recipies datapack so I can create a patched version without them? Thanks.

28

I'm all for new advancements. I've been trying to add a bunch for a while now, there's a set on one of my test servers which seems to work alright. Not too sure about the recipes though, looking at that list there's a few on there I think we might want to remove. I'll try and get my previous attempt at advancements more polished in the next few days and see about adding some of these too.

on this theme, I have taken it upon myself to go through the recipe list and remove any that I thought might be problematic. If there are any others that are also problematic please let me know and I can remove them as well.

The removed recipes are:
Notch apple recipe (8 Gold Blocks, 1 apple)
Debug Stick recipe (doesn't work on VC if you're not an admin anyway)
Campfire Magma Block Recipe (straight OP)

Patched ZIP: https://www.dropbox.com/s/k9fo5a9cm6fusid/platypack_1.4.6_VC_Patch.zip?dl=0

29
So I figured discussion of whether or not these would work is pointless w/o data, so I loaded up all the datapacks (but not plugins) in my paper testing server to test them. Here are the results:

1) RPG Loot

As expected, the generated structures had little to no regard for worldguard regions, and also completely overwrote existing terrain (a vanilla dungeon), as indicated by this screenshot

Given the evidence, I would give this plugin a pass.

Conclusion: Problematic

2) Technical Enchant

The datapack quite literally says in its built in guide " This datapack is incompatible with Spigot/Bukkit" No further investigation was performed.

Test Concluded.

Conclusion: Non-Functional

3) Improved Fishing

In the course of about 5 mins fishing w/ a max enchanted fishing rod, I got the following loot, excluding vanilla fishing loot:

4 diamonds
1 Enchanted golden apple
1 practically broken iron sword w/ Smite IV
1 Lead
1 Silverfish named "Sea Leach" that dropped the following:
   9x Iron Ore
   8x Coal Ore

fairly interesting, though im sure some of my drops are accreditable to Luck of the Sea III. No obvious problems.

Conclusion: Functional in testing environment

4) Expanded Advancement

while I was testing the other datapacks, I kept getting Advancements. It was quite enjoyable imo. Nothing ostensibly broken here.

Conclusion: Functional in testing environment

Please note that these tests do not reflect compatibility with the VillageCraft server, and only indicate compatibility with paper, as well as the blend of plugins on my server (VC's customised ShowCaseStandalone, WorldEdit, WorldGuard, CoreProtect, EssentialsX, UltimateCatcher)

30
The only one of these I'd like to see added to the server is the Expanded Advancement & Recipes.

Frankly I agree here. Its the only one that I dont see having too many potential problems, other than some recipes that need to be disabled.

31
I understand where you're going at regarding the structures, but the structures are summoned at y=12, so unless you have a base deep underground, it won't affect any builds.

The enchantments from Technical Enchants are simple to get and apply. Simply have a decent amount of levels, have lapis in your inventory, and then toss the item you want to enchant onto an enchantments table. Alternatively, doing this with a book will give you an enchanted book with the custom enchant. Combine with another item by tossing it onto an anvil with the book.

The custom mobs from Improved Fishing are just vanilla mobs with armor, tools, etc. and a name.

A structure generating irrespective of worldguard due to player action is a problem. Period.

What if hypothetically someone threw that pick axe on top my deep underground vault with millions in gold? does my gold get erased from existence to make way for this new dungeon? While I definitely think its a cool idea, to say that the structure generation method is incompatible with VillageCraft is a vast understatement. As far as I'm concerned, the first datapack is a straight no.

(Also in another related note, if someone did do that, which is obviously griefing, would logblock even be able to track the block changes/who threw the pickaxe? The answer doesn't change my answer regarding this datapack, but I suspect its a no)
