Tree miner
« on: 21 February 2021, 01:48:26 PM »
i have a plugin suggestion, it basically makes deforestation easier by automatically mining all the wood attached to the block of logs you break, say for example you break 1 oak log, all oak logs attached to that will be broken it will also take the appropriate durability from your tool if you had broken it normaly https://dev.bukkit.org/projects/tree-and-ore-miner it can be deactivated and reactivated so it doesnt get too annoying, i'd reccomend getting a different plugin for this type of idea so it doesnt do ores aswell but this is just the general idea of what its supposed to do, for me it would be really useful as i have a large forest by my castle and i'm constantly cutting down trees i'm sure alot more people will find this type of thing helpful.

Looking at this plugin's bukkit page, I notice that it says that it is out of date and not to use it. So that's a good reason to be against it already. However, let's consider the idea of a tree chopping plugin in and of itself:

I think a tree chopping plugin, such as the Timber plugin wouldn't be a good fit for VillageCraft. My biggest issue is I honestly think they make the game too easy. One of the great things you can do in Minecraft is fell a jungle giant, the largest tree in the game. To that end, it takes time and investment. It's not a four-block-chop & done situation like many tree-felling plugins make it. You need to either glide to the top and chop all the way down, or chop up the tree in a spiral, then at the top reverse and go back the way down, cleaning up the missed logs. I think it's good to require some significant investment of time to gathering an equally significant amount of wood.

On another note, In discussions with Naomi, one of the most prolific forest removers on the server, she has expressed in the past that if VillageCraft were to have some form of tree cutting plugin, it is unlikely there would be many forests left in the world, as she would happily chop them all down to pass time.

Also as far as timber plugins are concerned I do NOT recommend the timber plugin I linked earlier in this post. It was used purely for example. Due to some poor coding on the author's part, it ignores worldguard and the like and should not be used.

When considering tree felling I think the best implementation of it I've seen is tree felling in MCMMO, as it is a good way to allow tree felling, while not making it overpowered. Firstly you need to grind a high enough woodcutting to be able to use the skill. Secondly, it's not on all the time, it's an activated ability, meaning you can activate it, chop down 1 or two trees, and back to chopping the traditional way. I think this method is much better, as it puts reasonable limits on chopping down entire trees at once.

i agree i like the mcmmo thing and i also understand what you mean by making it too overpowered thats why i said you should probably use a different plugin that does almost the same thing, and the other thing is us forest choppers like me and naomi would find is very helpful so i think it should be a thing where there's like a lumberjack skill obviously theres also the fact that that would make there be just 1 skill so i'd like to also suggest skills where there's like 1 for garden work and stuff like that the only perk to garden work would be you can harvest crops faster in bulk, i'm not a good plugin suggester but the garden thing is just a general idea of how it would work not how it should, one way i can see that being overpowered would be the way it would make farming pumkins and melons easier so to try to balance it out i think it should only work with crops planted directly into the ground so melons and pumkins dont work and you have to grind for it to actually harvest a LARGE quantity of crops.

again im not good at suggesting things thats just my thoughts on the whole idea

I love chopping trees, deforestation is my minecraft passion.

I have to agree with Cyphur here that while a tree feller would be easier, there would be no forests left because I won't stop and making it easier will just extend my love of chopping trees.

If there is big interest in it I recommend having a separate resource world that players can go tree fell to their hearts content and not destroy the historic landscape of VC
There are a lot of attitudes going on around here, Don't let me get one.

reasons to vote naomi: second sexiest person on the ballot, slight southern drawl, has won woman of the year every year since 1899 (the mainstream media doesn't want you to know)

vote for naomi idiots

like if you need to me to write out a fully fledged post to persuade you i will, but i just prefer we avoid all that effort and you vote for naomi

Naomi is hot. Hot cm is nice. 8) 8)

I get what you mean with the separate world thing i've seen some servers have that but with the not being anymore forests is just not possible, minecraft has infinite generation meaning that theres no way to chop ALL the forests, now i wont underestimate you so maybe you would just chop all the trees within your region but the chopping thing just is not a valid reason to be against this plugin in my opinion and i understand what cyphur is saying so i came up with some sort of solution, like if you mined enough wood you would be able to break 2 at a time then 3 then 4 then 5 and so on making it so you actually have to put in some effort and you cant just insta-mine a whole forest like its nothing

The Naomi chopping down all the forests thing was half meant as a joke, but to address your counterargument: The Minecraft world is, strictly speaking, not infinite. There are lots of limitations causing this, ranging from programming limitations (numbers can only get so big) to file size limitations (a theoretical max generated Minecraft world is on the order of petabytes IIRC).

As for your suggested solution, I've never heard of a plugin that lets you do that, and I am really not in the mood, position, or inclination to custom code a solution. We could ask Luis to do it, but Luis currently has several other server-related projects listed down, A server to help administrate, and above all, a life to live outside of VillageCraft (I hear he does some really cool stuff). I don't think it would be a good idea to stack another stone onto that metaphorical mountain.

I maintain that as far as balanced tree felling style plugins go, MCMMO did it best. MCMMO's system rewards players for investing in the woodcutting skill with a powerful ability enabling one to fell a few trees quickly. The skill is not infinite, and has a recharge time, limiting its use. This is not to say MCMMO is a perfect plugin by any stretch of the imagination, just that their implementation of the woodcutting skill is good.

Lol next time don't go places you shouldn't be.

I think it would be a great idea to add a tree feller plugin if you could to the server. I have played on other servers with it and I don't think it makes the game too easy. You still have to go around and look for the the wood, it does take some time. I seen plugins when as soon a you chop one down and sapling is placed for a new one to grow, or the wood is chopped and the leaves are still left if you want to collect them. And as a builder I go through a lot a lot of wood and being able to collect wood faster is definitely more convenient when you're building your villages. Also the selling prices in the market can be adjusted so its not easy money.

If it can be done properly I think this would be a good plugin to add to the server.
