GOT piracy in Australia
« on: 11 July 2013, 01:42:18 AM »
Came across this article. It says that Australia was the third best/worst for pirating Game of Thrones, and since our population is only 22 million, our piracy rate per person is insane compared to the rest of the world. Now here is where the dumb part kicks in. The only ways for Australians to see Game of Thrones legally is through Foxtel (cable TV service here) who have an exclusivity deal, and will air the show way later than it gets aired in the US. The other option was through iTunes, which made the show available shortly after US air date. Of course you could wait months for the DVDs too...

Foxtel have now stopped the show going through iTunes. So they make it so you can only watch the show legally through their service, then bitch and moan when people pirate it even more. I can't watch The Daily Show online because of shitty Foxtel, I hate them. Sadly this represents the general state of competition in Australia (including retail)- there isn't any. Australia may be a great country but it is strangled by monopolies. No wonder we turn to piracy and online retail in such large numbers.
