Just saw this and thought it worthy of posting. My favourite RPG of all time, and the RPG I would call the best RPG ever (above Baldurs Gate 2, NWN2, any Fallout game) is Planescape: Torment. Well the original devs of that game are creating a spiritual successor called Torment: Tides of Numenera.
What is Planescape: Torment?
The depth of this game is just amazing. This game was more like playing a book. Your character is an immortal amnesiac on a quest to find out who he is. It turned all the standards and tropes of games of the time on their head. You are immortal, death is just a setback. In fact you must die in some places to move forward, in others dying can get you new information, you can even kill yourself to win an argument. Some of the best items in the game are tattoos. All of the NPCs you meet have stories, and you can talk to them to learn more or help them out. You can lie about who you are and see the consequences of those lies. Then when you reach the end, and realise why you are immortal, you get a hint that what you did was so... well you can find that out
A catchphrase for the game would be "What can change the nature of a man?"
Main theme:
If you love thoughtful, deep and interesting story and game lore then you should love this game, if you can get past the odd setting. If you like lots of action this game will have far too much reading for that. It's on gog.com now!
Not only that but the game has some really awesome spell cutscenes inspired by FF games.
Proof lol, poor theif got vapourised, literally.
Anyway the point to this post is the sequel. It is being funded through kickstarter, and is quite some time away from release. If ever there was going to be a good, modern RPG this is it.
