Explanation for the New Map
« on: 28 June 2012, 01:04:09 AM »
I really, really hate to beat a dead horse, but I'm concerned that the corruption issues are not entirely solved... I logged on recently to discover that not just one, but two of the chunks of the territory I asked to be regioned off for my small collection of buildings have been overwritten with new data due to corruption (or someone not paying attention, not sure). Given the close proximity of both of these chunks to spawn, combined with the fact that another chunk even closer to the area of spawn has already overwritten a small part of my mining shack (that I had to ask an admin to get rid of for me, thank you very much sir :P), I believe it's only a matter of time before the corruption issues begin to spill over and erase precious memories in the main square of Qualia. Whether it's still a broken, leaky program, or just the nature of an old and very outdated map (which I suspect might be part of the case), the problems are still present. I will supply screenshots if anyone wishes to see the examples I've mentioned above.

I really, really think consideration should be given to the multiworld plugin. It's fine and dandy to say that people are going to lose their houses if we switch to a new map, but if this gets worse, people will start losing their houses even if we keep the old one. I dread the day I log on to find part of a village demolished because of an erroneously regenerated chunk or chunk group. Please, action must be taken to remedy this.  :-\

The multiworld plugin will allow us to keep using this map as long as we need to in order for villages, houses, items, etc. to be transferred to a new map. If more resources are required, perhaps it's time to start considering investment - A targeted strategy to get more donors online is right around the corner, I've done it a dozen times before and I have no problem helping with whatever is necessary to get the ball rolling on funding.

I do not - I repeat, I DO NOT - want to get rid of the old map in any way, shape, or form. I love all of the villages on there, especially Qualia. Their complexity and the thought and time that have gone into crafting those villages is irreplaceable and invaluable. But it is my worry that, if we choose not to go with a new map for fear of losing the old, that eventually, we'll lose it anyways to methods out of our control. This is not a cry for change out of preference, it is out of necessity. I beg that you consider that when you are looking at this plugin.

Sincerely,
Islid

Rainy, he also said it would take large amounts of persuasion to change his mind, and Islid is trying to persuade him right now. So think before you speak.

That was a chunk reload not corruption. It happens in area of low block change. Corruption is where the area is taking up much more data then it should. Or random blocks appearing like mid air. Now it could reload an active chunk by probability but have not seen it at all (besides it destroying a small road out of quallia).

Also rainy remember the you can ring it up if you have a strong logical argument? What islid said is.

It's not a dead horse, if the issue keeps happening to the point that it is truly problematic, then please keep bringing it up.

Post some screenies btw.

I'm gonna start googling how to solve this (without going to extremes like changing to a new map). Everyone else feel free to look for solutions as well. :)

Thanks a lot, all of you guys - Like I said, I'm really anxious to keep this map, but my personal main priority, if it were up to me, would be the preservation of the villages themselves, even if the land would unfortunately have to be scrapped. I like all of the buildings and it'd be terrible to see them destroyed. :/

I'll post screenshots shortly of the chunk errors near my place.

Alright, the first screenshot is a shot of the large hole in the lake left by the second chunk that tried to eat my home >_> If you can see the stone path to the right, that's the same path that extends right around my mining shack and up to the back of my house. That's how close it was.

EDIT: There was an admin that assisted me in it's removal that can verify it's existence - for the life of me, I cannot remember which one it was. If the admin responsible could say so, I'd really appreciate it. Terribly sorry about that. I have the worst memory! XD

The second chunk is an actual untouched chunk that appeared maybe two or three days after I started settling the area. I haven't touched it other than to halt the flow of water that was coming down and knocking over all of the torches I set out.

The third chunk, I removed last night - it was where the forest of trees is right now on my property. However, if you'd like proof, I can dig under one grass layer and show you the stone directly underneath in a perfect square pattern, and I can show you that in-game if you'd like. I destroyed the chunk top because it was far too close and took up valuable building space.

If you need proof of the existence of the third chunk, you're welcome to ask the residents of the village, especially Actmyname, xxNeroXonxx, and Patomatic123. All three of them should have seen it, especially the latter two, who were present when I was destroying it last night.

I can find some more examples out in the wilderness that I've stumbled upon, but that might take a little longer. Tell me if you need more examples.

It's a lot easier with a mod like Reil's minimap and look at biomes as most of the places that got reloaded are different biomes in the new version.

Some more examples, courtesy of JanuaryJones and her village issues:

http://i935.photobucket.com/albums/ad197/Psitanium/ScreenShot2012-06-28at74739PM.png
http://i935.photobucket.com/albums/ad197/Psitanium/ScreenShot2012-06-28at74818PM.png
http://i935.photobucket.com/albums/ad197/Psitanium/ScreenShot2012-06-28at74824PM.png

All of these are examples of the same subtle regen, if you can tell - the abrupt change in elevation and the missing house and walkway are key indicators.

http://i935.photobucket.com/albums/ad197/Psitanium/ScreenShot2012-06-28at74919PM.png

These two are attempted smoothing-out efforts of two more corruptions, the end of which can be seen in this screenshot:

http://i935.photobucket.com/albums/ad197/Psitanium/ScreenShot2012-06-28at74902PM.png

All of this range was corrupted.

http://i935.photobucket.com/albums/ad197/Psitanium/ScreenShot2012-06-28at75032PM.png

Both of these are giant chunks written over a village that used to be here, but is mostly erased now.

The last two are examples of just broken chunks in the middle of the wilderness, and these examples I found rather striking due to the extreme differences between the corrupted chunk and the surrounding land. The first chunk is in the foreground in the second picture there, so it's a total of two chunks.

Just for clarification of what we're dealing with. Thanks, Jan!
