hobby thread.
« on: 1 June 2013, 03:09:28 AM »
Well a certain other thread made me sad so here is a happy thread. What are your hobbies? What is something that interests you? Do you have a job that is your hobby or is it something in your off time? Tell us why you like it!

I guess I have two hobbies. First is game design. I wish to make games, largely from the design angle. How systems work, what makes a game fun, how stats and combat or puzzles work, even things like UI functionality and how it needs to differ per system (console vs PC for example). Chronic anxiety makes it hard to get going but if I could get a dream job it would be designing games. I particularly like concepts like situational awareness. The suppression room in BWL (vanilla WoW) I found intense but also fun, it required constant attention to what was going on. As xpacs came the raids shifted away from this and more to mod awareness and strat awareness, rather than situation awareness. Fights that required mass dispelling or debuffs that required mods to detect are especially bad (but were also in vanilla WoW). I really liked the UI in Crysis (PC). It was really fluid and fast to change suit function. Skyrim's UI is also amazing to navigate, if a little cumbersome to use (on PC).

I also think appealing to fans is far better than fleecing them. Bethesda, Valve, Firaxis are all developers that interact with fans and so have amazing communities. Even Path of Exile has an amazing (if small) community. Blizzard, EA, Ubisoft, etc either look down on or are even openly hostile to their consumers. Blizzard used to be good, they used to communicate to their fans. Now they seem to always have this tone of talking down to them. Ubisoft has openly called PC gamers pirates lol. Also I will never forgive EA for killing Westwood Studios :(

Another area I like is the subtle things. Sound and environment. Skyrim is an amazing game but it feels "small". Cities are barely a handful of families. MMO's tend to be really static too. I'd like to make an MMO that had seasonal transitions, like orange leaves in autumn, snow and bare trees in winter, grass and flowers in spring, that sort of thing. MMO's also tend to be shy about changing existing content. I mean if a raid is conquering a zone, perhaps at some time that zone might actually be conquered? MMO's seem deathly afraid of adding limited duration events, but they will casually make old content so obsolete it may as well be gone lol. I think in terms of gameplay Runescape is amazing, even if it gets lots of shit heaped on it. The quests are actually quests!

Might post about my other hobby later. It's kendo!

First off, I'd like to say that Air, your photos are epic!

My hobby is coding. Specifically my mod for Minecraft, that a few of you tested a while ago. It is in java, like Minecraft, and I like that as it is an easy language to learn, and there is lots of possibilities for things you can do in it. I try to make it the best mod that I can make it, as I don't like mods that are full of bugs and are always breaking. There is always times though when you find a bug and you know what is causing it, just not how to fix it... But when things like this happen you just feel more proud when you fix it. (I'm in one of those situations now, stupid 1.5 changing liquid mechanics -_-)

I'd say also that playing Minecraft is a hobby of mine, as I do that quite a bit (perhaps too much...) Mainly playing on servers like this one or Chaos's server, but also on single player a bit doing things like map building, as that is also fun!

However at the moment, I spend most of my time revising (could you call that a hobby?) for some exams, on the 3rd and 10th of June, which is why I haven't been on VC loads recently...

Sorry if I have waffled on a bit and wasted your time...
Luis :)

Personally, seeing as I'm bedridden, I have to have a lot of hobbies.

Currently, I'm gaming a lot (since I have a gaming laptop, I can play a PS2 emulator and relive all my favorite games). Right now I'm replaying Kingdom Hearts, and I also found a game from my childhood that I rented once and fell in love with (and never saw again) called Dawn of Mana.

Otherwise, I do HTML work for fun, and I love to write. I'm currently building a... okay so they're actually called post-based RPGs, but it's easier to explain them as collaborative writing sites. You build your character and you have your character interact with another's character in a post-by-post setting. You basically write stories together, basing your posts off what they write. Some people get really into it, like over 1k+ words per post, but I'm too busy for that nonsense.

I also have a novel I'm working on called "Aven". I only get bits and pieces done at a time because I have other things going on.

Also, I'm watching the entire first season of the Pokemon anime and a bunch of movies (both Disney and not) in the background.

It's really hard to keep entertained when you're in the same room for a couple days straight.

I know this probably means nothing coming from me but they are some of the best pictures I've seen. I set the first one as my background :). But back to the topic. My hobbies include mostly slackers work (no offense). MC, D3, laser tag, school ( not really a choice -_-), and spending time with family and friends. Oh and trolling, one of my main hobbies.

Also, if you do choose to hack VC in whatever method, I can get your IPs from the server log, and with more coding knowledge than most people here, I could easily and more importantly legally hack you back. And if you hack VC, I'll be cross. Don't try it.

That river one is nice. Do you have one like that but with the water lower?

blacka_ch33ze what sort of maths? lol

Math + science would be physics or maybe chemistry. You know if you want to be an astronaut then having leet physics skills is a huge plus! The most interesting jobs right now are in physics, if you can understand it. You should look up Richard Feynman on youtube, there is a few videos and he is a great teacher. What I learnt watching one- ice is slippery because it expands when it freezes (most stuff shrinks), so when you put pressure on it it compresses it, and forces the ice on the surface back into a liquid state, sort of self lubricating, and makes it really slippery. If ice shrank when it froze then it would just be like rock. People say science is boring and stuff but it's not, it's really interesting! Plus you can make exploding things :D

Nope :( I took that from a boat so my angle options were a little restricted.

Well, I like to play video games quite a lot on my computer and occasionally my PS2. I also like to create models from LEGO and listening to my music is something I like to do. That's about it, though I do like watching TV and things like Starsky and Hutch.

I agree with the importance of being involved with your fans rather than trying to suck every last penny out of them. I too will never forgive EA for destroying so many good companies. EA is single-handedly responsible for destroying a huge chunk of the industry's creativity. Fuck EA. I've heard excellent things about Path of Exile, though I'm not huge on the gameplay at all. Diablo III has it beat in gameplay for me, but we all know that the Diablo III team fucked over their fans. I'll disagree with the Blizzard thing when it comes to StarCraft II, as they've done a damn fine job and are constantly implementing things the fans want. We should celebrate good companies like Valve. NaughtyDog are specifically trying to change the industry by bringing back good story telling. I also like the little things in games, I find them so important.

[rant]
I have to ask though.... Bethesda? Why is this such a loved company? Fallout 3 has some of the worst mechanics I have ever seen in a modern big-budget game. The combat is a total joke. I don't even know what to say... It's just so bad. And I really gave it a chance too. I even played some of the cash-grab DLC, which has to be some of the most insulting trash ever. They also made some of the worst games I've played in years, like WET and Brink. They bought id Software, which pisses me off, and Bethesda doesn't get to claim RAGE (a good game) as a Bethesda game. I'm sorry, I don't like Bethesda. Fallout 3 and Skyrim are exactly the lazy, repetitive, unpolished, awful-cash-grab-DLC RPGs I just wish were better in the industry. I hate how they are apparently the standard. Did I mention that Bethesda/Zenimax is a litigious money-hungry bully of a company who sued Mojang? Yeah....

I agree FO3 was shit. FO:New Vegas was a better game, even if a bit buggy. Skyrim has this quality, I don't know. It clearly feels like a dumbed down console game, but the controls on PC are good, plus the awesome mods available pick up the slack. Bethesda are great for the modding, or at least being savvy enough that they know allowing modding helps build community. I can't help but feel TES Online will be a big disappointment, like every "WoW killer" MMO before it. Betting it will still have the level grind, the end game is where all the fun is, PvP/Raid gear token systems and that is why it won't be as good as it should. I think it's major innovation will be having a world that feels a little less static.

About the suing- Zenimax did that and I can understand it. From a trademark perspective they have to pursue litigation that could infringe upon their trademarks, even if everyone knows it will fail. If they don't a competitor down the line could argue their work doesn't infringe Bethesda's works because of the precedent they set. It's silly politics though, and that is why I hate politics. Bethesda Softworks are the development team and had no involvement in that. If you want an awesome read about litigation gone wrong look up "Edge gaming" (not the magazine), the guy there is a massive tool.
Note: he is such a tool he even tried to sue EA. What an idiot.

Lastly I love Kickstarter. It has allowed amazing things to be done. It showed how wrong publishers were in saying certain games were not viable. I've posted about a few before but there are a lot of kickstarter games that look interesting, with the first few probably being released around Christmas this year: Dead State, Grim Dawn, Torment: Tides of Numenera, Shadowrun Returns, Wasteland 2, Star Citizen, Project Eternity.

I was telling Ako that the mods for New Vegas and Skyrim make up for a lot of the shitty stuff in the games.

I was looking forward to an awesome Lord of the Rings Skyrim mod but it got shutdown a while ago by Warner Brothers. They even said something this stupid; “While we appreciate our fans’ enthusiasm, we also need to protect our IP rights.”·
