Building a gaming PC.

Hey all.

So my current PC is quite old, from 2009, and although having tried to upgrade it, it's still quite slow. So I've decided that it's time for a new computer, built from scratch. My dad and I decided on a max price of Seven-hundered Pounds and it'd be great if people who are willing to suggest some good parts for a gaming PC would do so. Such as, graphic cards, hard drives, etc, etc.

I'm looking to build a computer which would be able to run things like Fallout 4, Assassin's Creed and other high-end games at high settings. Preferably running at above 40 FPS.

At 700 pounds, you will be able to build a mighty gaming PC that can run anything on ultra settings for years. This gives a lot of room for us to suggest parts.

First thing is first: Intel or AMD? Both have their benefits, but just for simple compatibility with games, Intel is generally the safer choice.

So here's some preliminary notes:

MAIN:
- Intel-compatible Motherboard
- Probably an i7 series Intel processor (CPU) with lotsa sexy GHz
- A strong Nvidia graphics card (GPU)
- 16 GB of RAM

MORE:
- A Case that looks pretty and has the things you want (there's a lot of variation here - some cases are just a truly empty shell, but most come with USB ports and things, or nice cable management built-in, and some are set up for crazy cooling and lighting apparatuses. You probably want just a common ready-to-install-stuff case).
- A 600 or 650 watt Power Supply (PSU) - I'm assuming this based on components you'll want to buy for a powerful PC. In the event you need more juice, get a bigger one.
- Cooling: Most cases come with a fan, you might want to grab a 2nd fan (not expensive), or if you're feeling rambunctious you can get liquid cooling (more expensive).

OTHER:
- Operating System: Windows 7 is free via piracy. No idea about Windows 10 yet. You don't want Windows 8. You don't want Mac because you want to game. Linux is free, and now that Steam is on Linux it's getting better, but not great yet. Suggestion is Win7 (or 10), and if you have am existing copy you might be able to just use it.
- Monitor(s): Two is better than one.
- CD/DVD/BluRay tray, if you want one.

Thanks for the suggestions. Ten recommended a GTX Nivida 970 graphics card, which he says is pretty good. I'll take a look into these suggestions.

I have a GTX 970, runs great. I don't think an Intel i7 is necessary, just get an intel i5 4690k. I have the previous version of it and it still runs great.

Mac I can't be bothered giving an opinion about, as I know I'll get shot down and this isn't my thread to start a rant. Linux is nice though. Simple, fast, highly adaptable. Bit more work than Windows, but it's a UNIX system which is nice. Noket can give a better opinion if you're serious. Like Ako said though, it's great, but not really up to par with Windows for a main computer (Unless you're Noket, or hate Windows)

Win10 is a free upgrade from 7 or 8, you're correct.

You can give your opinion all you want about Mac, but it just isn't compatible with a lot of games (and has a lot of problems with games that are compatible or partially compatible, leading to differences between windows and mac in some games - and this is unfortunately Apple's own fault most of the time, like not supporting popular 3D graphics frameworks like OpenGL). It's unfortunately a fact, and means he probably shouldn't choose Mac for a gaming PC. Also, he's building a gaming PC, so that basically means Windows. You don't build macs unless you're doing a hackintosh.

Linux is free and you can dual-boot it with Windows if you want it.

I've been hearing from friends on other servers that their Nivida cards have had issues lately in terms of their cards repeatedly being ejected.
As for i5, I use it and it's pretty decent enough.

Windows 10 is definitely worth upgrading to from 7 or 8(.1). It's smooth, clean, and is far less buggy.

A really good one built from scratch I've seen before consists of the following:

Case: Antec P182
Mobo: Asus P8Z68-V PRO/GEN3 ATX LGA1155
CPU: Intel Core i7-2600K, overclocked to 4.2GHz (I think i5, again, does the job decent enough)
CPU H/S: COOLER MASTER Hyper 212 Plus (You can find these for $20, but I'm pretty sure there are cheaper alternatives)
RAM: CORSAIR Vengeance 16GB (4x 4GB) DDR3 1600
GPU: EVGA SuperClocked GeForce GTX 570 HD
PSU: CORSAIR Professional Series HX750 750W
SSD: Crucial M4 64GB & Samsung 850 EVO 500GB
HDD: 10+ TB of hard disk space, internal and networked backup
OS: Windows 7 Ultimate (but again, you'll prefer Win10 instead)

I have no idea how much that actually costs, but I know for a fact that it's quite decent.
I also have the feeling I'm about to get a lot of hate directed towards me for no apparent reason.

I've had my custom desktop for 6 years now, and it still runs great. 75% of the parts in that thing came from ASUS. they have really good parts for custom PCs, and seriously great premade ones. I wouldn't recommend any of the parts in my PC because they are 6 years out of date, but the new ASUS products are probably seriously amazing. I would recommend parts by them, but i'm on spring break and too lazy to add specifications.

Anyways, Win 10 is solid, but so is Win 7.

There's nothing wrong with either, and Win10 is free until june i think if you have 7 or up. Just worth noting.
