How does Mob Catcher work?

How does it work? Do you just throw eggs at it and it can drop the spawn egg or something?

throw eggs, it has a chance to make the mob into a spawn egg in exchange for gold nuggets.

Some other mobs like Shulkers and Endermites need redstone dust instead of golden nuggets
