1.13 World Reset?
« on: 8 May 2018, 01:46:00 PM »
Since 1.13 is gonna change how the ocean biome is gonna generate has anyone though about doing a sever world reset. The current world is really old many players through the years have built so many villages close together and explored most of the map. When the server updated a couple years ago you have to travel far out to get the the new biome the generated. Haveing a rest could be a good idea in the since that could get people excited to play a gain and get new players to stick around longer and play. Just a suggestion.

Hell no, so many people have put so many hours into getting where they currently are in the server.

Oh look, 7 year old world with tens of thousands of hours put into it, let's reset it.

Sounds more reasonable to fly to the biomes to locate them and then make warps.

I would only say yes BUT only if we had the option to have our villages copy/pasted into the new map. Without offence, player count is down at the moment so i suppose that means not many villages needing transfer (if they indeed want it).
Me personally have spent so very much time solo building my village and am on almost daily. it would break my heart to have it wasted  :'(

VC will die with dignity, with its old map. It will receive a royal funeral.

Curiously enough, the only thing that went through the mind of the bowl of petunias as it fell was Oh no, not again. Many people have speculated that if we knew exactly why the bowl of petunias had thought that we would know a lot more about the nature of the Universe than we do now.

one of the things VC advertises is that theirs a history to explore in the old towns.

although i'm kind of 50/50 for a map reset. I think we could do it in a cool way where if people want to explore the old VC map we could do it on an alternate world. where owners of current villages can explore them and work in them, but without expanding, and new features wont go to the old map.. just like old market stopped getting updated once the new market was done.

this would satisfy both sides I think. a new map for people to play on, and the option to play on the old map for people who own villages in it. we could also transfer items over and some of the more popular villages over to the new map.

although I think a map reset could be cool, if we do it properly, I think if we did we should do it slowly over time, a parl vote, staff setting up a new map and setup a bunch of conditions for the people who wouldn't want a new map. and give people enough time to hear about it and prepare. we could also transfer over files such as money, stats, ranks, etc.

like Ir0ck said, people are holding onto the past. and we could also put the old map onto an alt world with the plugin we have so people could still explore. and with 1.13 coming out people are gonna need to travel hundreds of thousands of blocks out to find new oceans. VCs map is very outdated and I kind of agree its time for a change.

holding onto the past because there is years of builds on the server. Plus we saw how the vanilla server worked out, People would play for a week then get bored of starting over.

I'm extremely against this idea. I've always loved the fact that we've never reset the world. Like 99% of servers this old have reset their world mutliple times, we haven't. We won't reset the world for some dumb new biome and we also won't make it a secondary world. Come on.

Want a new map? Then make that new map an alt world, but not the main VC map.

Absolutely not.

since i joined vc, the map in the spawn areas has changed so much its almost lile we have had a reset and completely rebuilt. so i really dont think a map resets a bad idea considering we can transfer notable buildings over. we just need fresh terrain not 100k blocks out.

A map reset would be interesting. Yeah sure we will lose hours of play time but at least you can start fresh with a new map and fix all the farm-able money making methods.

I certainly would not want to lose any of players, hard earned, works of art. So would it be possible to keep, as suggested, 200K around the spawn (would that encompass my town  :-[ :P ) and out from that, new land? Warps created would all that would be needed. It seems a shame not to have access to what seems to me as quite a kool update (visually at least).

I say NO... hell NO.

IMO, a map reset is a very bad idea.    VC will lose >>1,000,000x more than it will ever gain.   What's the point of building something cool if you can't enjoy it later cause it gets erased?    Why make the effort?   The main reason the other VC sucks is because they reset their map (there are other reasons too).

Like Air said, make a new world with the new map and leave the VC world just as it is.    Or as previously suggested, have a couple of warps to areas with the new biomes.

VC is a unique treasure that should continue to evolve.

What about villages beyond that point? Could they be moved back or something, because my main base and storage area is way past 200k blocks.

VC prides itself on history, especially when it's been around since 2011. As Air said, many other servers reset, and it's always hard to recover from.

I vote yes, you guys are too attached to the monuments of the past. It is time to forge a new era and leave the old behind. You guys are shunning the prospect of a new canvas because you spent time on an older painting that is finished now. Think of it like a renaissance for the server a time for new ideas and creations, let us not stagnate but make a new world together as we did the old one.

The Minecraft world extends to +/-30,000,000. Even if we were to assume everywhere +/-1,000,000 of spawn has been explored (which is FAR from the truth), that's still only 0.11% of the whole world. We don't need a reset. The whole idea behind the game is it's meant to be infinite, even if you've built on it for 7 years. People generally explore in lines, going out in one direction until they find something they like. Yes, people may have builds near 1,000,000 blocks out, but there's so much empty space between that and spawn that hasn't been generated yet, waiting for the new terrain in the new update.

If you want a canvas metaphor, it's the equivalent of buying a square 1m canvas, and wanting a new one after you've covered less than a cm of it. If that's hard to visualise, picture this. If the whole minecraft world were your skin, we've used around about 4cm squared of your total body area AT MOST. For those who find 4cm confusing, it's about this much space on my hand.

Plus, 1.7 was "the update that changed the world" and added a whole bunch of new biomes, yet we managed to cope well with that change. In fact, 1.7 added 32 new biomes, whereas 1.13 adds only 7 (in the overworld), all of which are ocean biomes.

We could just make a warp like 5mill blocks out and let people explore, this might lag the server but idk.
In terms of lag, you load approx 7x7 chunks around you wherever you are. The server doesn't care if that's at 0,0 or at 10mil,10mil. Going far out has no effect. In fact, making a new world would actually be laggier. In my opinion, if people are really bothered about running out of space, then I'd be all up for teleporting them far out and setting up a warp. Heck, I'd even let them pick the biome if it were up to me, it's not a problem. Or (provided the actual world gen algorithm doesn't change much), I could regenerate an ocean near you if you wanted. I'd have to look into it, but that should be possible.

TL;DR: I'm very against a world reset. There's far too much unexplored space to justify a reset, and we have too much history to do it. If you want new terrain, I'll happily set up a warp somewhere new with a biome you want.

Eloquent and convincing. Luis has given an answer so good, that I don't need to type one.

The world is absolutely massive, nearly infinite, and there is so much unexplored land that there will be nearly infinite new biomes to explore. We absolutely don't need a reset. Plenty of people have given excellent reasons why, so I won't add any more.

Making an alt world with the new terrain generation seed is an option, but instead:
Let's have a competition for who can find the new biomes first. First person to find a new biome gets 5 million VC dollars and an enchanted weapon or armour of their choice. We can do this for each of the 7 new biomes. Each person can claim the prize once.

Sound cool?
