Map of where you're all from
« on: 7 September 2019, 07:33:09 PM »
When I updated to 1.14, I pulled a full server backup, meaning I have things like logs for every player who've ever joined, as well as their last used IP. Out of curiosity, I used data one of our plugins gathers about you to see where people have played from, and decided to put it on a map. I present to you, a map showing where every one of the 17,439 players who've ever joined our server come from! It's coloured based on the log10 count of players, any other method of colouring would just have the USA as a bright blob, then everywhere else looking pretty much the same

Note this is only counting players who joined before the 1.14 update, so anyone who's joined in the last few weeks probably won't be on this. Sorry :(

If you're curious, here's the breakdown:
Albania: 3
Anonymous Proxy: 25 Some people mask their IP in such a way that it registers as anonymous
Argentina: 9
Australia: 937
Austria: 28
Azerbaijan: 1
Bahamas: 1
Bahrain: 4
Barbados: 4
Belgium: 131
Bermuda: 4

Denmark: 140
Dominican Republic: 9
Ecuador: 2
Egypt: 1

Europe: 11 There's some IPs which register as being in the European registry, but aren't tied to a country. In other continents, this'd show as N/A
Finland: 60
France: 76
Georgia: 1
Germany: 186
Gibraltar: 1
Greece: 20
Guam: 5
Guatemala: 5
Honduras: 1

N/A: 461 This is people who've used an IP Essentials can't trace. Nothing special, just a weird quirk of how IPs work
Nepal: 5
Netherlands: 478
Netherlands Antilles: 1 This hasn't existed as a unified nation since 2010, so it's weird this would register as having a player. I tried looking up the UUID, but Mojang's API claims it doesn't exist
New Zealand: 198
Norway: 155
Oman: 3
Pakistan: 6
Palestinian Territory: 3
Paraguay: 1
Peru: 5

It'd be difficult without searching every single one of the IPs, and it's unlikely there's a way of doing that without being blocked by whoever I check with. I can look into it though

EDIT: On second thoughts, I could just download the IP database locally and do it that way. Give me a couple of days

I am really struggling to understand how the colouring system works. Pakistan is brighter than India despite India having many more logins. Colombia appears brighter than Brazil, despite Brazil having 10x the logins. New Zealand and Australia look to be brighter than Canada. Just confused.

Oh is it based on ratio? as in x number of users per 10,000 people?

LOG10(n)+1 /LOG10(MAX (n))+1 is the formula I used in Google Sheets, which became the opacity on a map template I got from Wikimedia that they use for all their maps. It's possible the way they made the map that it's not going to work exactly as I expected, I didn't check it

Turns out the IP database I found is about half a gig, and out of all the programming languages I know, I've yet to find one which can comprehend that. I probs won't be able to get it working
