New World?
« on: 26 January 2020, 10:22:01 PM »
Would adding a new world separate from the main one we use now, with a separate inv and economy, increase the amount of players that stay on the server? I feel like new players don't stay as often because they are overwhelmed with how much is actually built around spawn, and the towns around spawn have been dead for years. Old players have nothing to do anymore except make their already massive farms even bigger, and it seems to me like if we had a fresh start, it might attract more players back.

We could keep the old world and have a command to bring you there, but have new players spawn in the new world, and that one could begin to populate more.

I know this might not be a popular opinion but I think it would be a good idea.

Lets be honest things are a wee bit stale at the moment. If the old world is not being gotten rid of then I think it would be a grand idea. Iask two questions
1 Would we wait for 1.15 to become available first (I have no idea of the availability)
2 How would we handle items from one to the other with this 'command'? This obviously goes for money too.

I ask the second, as while not wanting to ruin a new economey, it would be a tough start specially with the voting reward system broken still (not that i mind a challenge too much).

I actually really like this idea, however, village craft vanilla was similar but didn't do so well. I'd say its worth another try though.

I said we could still keep the old world and add a new one, so the idea that it shouldn't happen because of the old world is kinda a pointless argument.

The old world would still be there and be playable, it just wouldn't be where people spawn anymore.

I waited a bit to respond to this so I could see how the discussion went (and because I was away for a bit and the wifi was terrible)

My opinion on this is, and always has been, a hard no. The fact we've been around since 2011 is something not many servers can say, and the fact that the original world is still here gives everything heritage, and shows the history of the server. Looking on the overviewed map, there's plenty of space near spawn where people haven't claimed yet. There's always /rtp to get people further out if they want. As a compromise, I think we could quite easily set up some teleports, like those in the end, which can take people to a ring of far-out places with entirely new terrain. It seems to work well in the end, I don't know why Mojang never added a similar thing in the overworld.

We shut down VCV a year(?) ago because everyone who was playing on it had kinda done as much as they were going to. That being said, I'm always up for bringing it back if there's enough demand

Based on what I've seen, 1.15 seems more stable than 1.14. I'll try and look into how updatable the server is in the coming weeks. I should be slightly less busy than normal for a bit (don't quote me on that). The update was supposed to be a bug fix update, I'm eager to put it on VC :)

That would be arousing, I think we should just do one warp point though, I don't want to be the only on several million blocks away from everything.

Expanding on this idea, maybe open a new one each time there is a major update.

One of the ideas I had for it was to have each of the warp points come out in a different biome, so people could set up in scenery they wanted. That being said, opening one with every major update could be a good idea, although it does somewhat rely on Mojang having updates big enough to warrant new terrain

I personally like Green's idea of a new spawn a lot, it gets rid of the problem of removing the history of the world but also provides the "fresh start." I understand that we have the ability to warp to the outlands, but that can isolate you completely from other villages and takes away the community aspect for newer players. I don't really agree with the point that there's still space around spawn, it's almost completely taken up by villages built by old and inactive players.

I really like this. A minecraft world is 30mil * 30mil; this is easily enough so that we could keep all old villages and structures active and able to be built on as well create new things. I think it would also really help with getting some more players online and new players to stay longer.

Throwing this out there, to see what everyone thinks about it:

I like the idea of opening a new warp point with every update, and I reckon it could be combined in with the biome idea. However, how would people feel about starting out with a few warps initially, as a way of "retroactively" opening them for recent updates?

Open from the start:
- There's a nice big ocean in one of the spots I have in mind, with lots of cute little islands, which could be fun to build in. We could have this open from the get-go, thanks to the 1.13 update
- There's a large ice/snow area too, which was recently updated in 1.10 I believe, which would be nice for players trying to get somewhere colder
- To celebrate the new bamboo, parrots, and pandas, there's a relatively large jungle in a nice location, which would be fun to build in
- Finally, there's a spot near some flower forests, plains, and deserts, which would be nice as a combo of the 1.14 (village and pillage) and 1.15 (bees in flowers) updates.

If people are on board with this idea, I'd also suggest opening all of these as a grand "welcome to 1.16" event, so the nether at all of these points is new too, from the 1.16 update. Hopefully that won't take too long to come

I've had a look at Mojang's roadmap for the future, and they seem to be continuing on with their trend of doing biome-themed updates, and there's 5 major ones listed on the wiki, which I think we can combine in to 4 for the future.

To open later:
- Their next update in 2020 is likely to be focusing on mountain biomes, adding goats, snow, and better terrain gen. There's a spot I've got in mind for this, which hopefully we'd open towards the end of the year when that update comes out.
- Beyond that, there's 4 more biomes they plan to do, but they don't specify the order. One is the badlands (mesa), where they plan to add vultures, tumbleweed, and a new cacti. Again, there's a good spot planned out for that to open when the update drops
- Swamps are on their list too, and they might get frogs, alongside a new type of tree and boat
- Also on their list is a plan to update deserts and savannahs, but due to the way the world generates I think it'd be beneficial to wait these out and combine them into one section, and open it when the second update comes out. There's a spot I have in mind which is desert and savannah for as far as the eye can see, and those two updates could add palm trees, boabab trees, oases, termites, meerkats, and ostriches.

I know I said a lot, and it does depend on Mojang sticking to their plan, but how's that for an idea?

Open 4 areas with the 1.16 update, taking you out to places which have been enhanced in recent updates. These will have a decent mix of biomes for people to spread out in and build where they want. Then, over the next few updates, open another 4 areas for the biomes which will be updated in the future. Should any other changes come about that we're not expecting, we can adjust these plans to add new areas.

(I've mentioned the 1.16 update, it looks like it'll be released soon, and if we're doing this idea, it might be worth going straight to that rather than spending a couple of weeks on 1.15. I may change my mind on this though)

Thoughts?

I know I'm a bit late to this discussion, but I have to say I love the idea of adding new spawns to the current world to help people explore new biomes. I think this would be perfect to keep everyone on one world together instead of splitting the new players (who will go to a new world) and the old players (who would prefer to stay on the OG world where they have spent years working on). This could be an amazing way to expand the VC community, allowing for new exploring to take place, without shifting the focus away from the work players have spent years on. This could also help strengthen the idea of continents, and perhaps staff could officialise continents (using the geography of the server and not political village borders) in order to add a new layer of RPG, and we could even see the equivalent of NAFTA, EU and ASEAN (or even a new UN and NATO) in VC, as players in the past have tried these but with the invention and implementation of official continents, we could see more of these and they could be successful due to more interactive and detailed RPG.
