Hotels closed in other countries?
« on: 24 September 2020, 02:06:13 PM »
Hello fellow internet dwellers! I was doing a school project earlier outlining how other countries are responding to the Coronavirus and found out that hotels are closed for commercial use in the UK? So I an intrigued to here from some of the players that live in other countries what they know about closures in hospitality.

For example in the US it is state based, but in Virginia hotels have been open the whole time they have just seen very low numbers until a recent rise, (Still not to 50% capacity I believe)

Have hotels been closed in your country this whole time? or and I just misreading the information I'm finding on the internet?

Are they? As far as I know they're open, providing they're what the government call "COVID secure". I could be wrong though, it's not really been mentioned in the news too much.

Things were closed for a long time, we entered national lockdown 23rd March, and it was in full effect for around 3 months, with things slowly easing since (although still too quickly in my opinion). Hospitality was only allowed to open around the end of June. To try and help them, VAT was cut from 20% to 5% for any hospitality business, until January.

In other similar sectors, restaurants/cafes/pubs closed on 20th MArch, and weren't allowed to reopen until late June. There was a scheme called "eat out to help out" where the government would pay for 50% of any meal in August (up to £10) to encourage people to go and spend in restaurants. The government is now trying to blame the public for the new (very drastic) spike in cases, because people went to restaurants as we were told to.

There's a new curfew on many hospitality businesses requiring them to close at 2200 now, in response to the new higher-than-before second wave of cases.

It seems hotels are open in Canada, with ramped up cleaning and disinfecting protocols.

interesting indeed the article I was reading could have been old as well but U hadn't heard about the restaurant thing either. It's fascinating what a small worldview the US has.

I also haven't heard anything about Canada despite being so close. Here in the US it is also supposed to be increased sanitation but who knows how many places are following that. Where I live the conservative health officials don't check businesses which can be stressful as a customer when you see them ignore the guidelines.

Thanks for the input!

Haha, funny you say this, oh self-aware one. Don't be the rest of the world's stereotype of people from the US. There's a whole world beyond your borders ;)

Shocks me all the time too. People need to get their heads out of their asses and study some foreign affairs sometime.

Here in Mexico they closed for a couple weeks but it seems like they've been open again for a while, especially in tourist areas. Rates have gone down a LOT though. I get daily offers (very tempting ones) from a Mexican travel agency I've used a few times. They sent me a great offer the other day for a 10 day stay in Cancun at the CUN Ritz-Carlton. Was about the same price you'd pay for a weekend stay in 2019 but for TEN days lol. Being stuck in one of the biggest concrete shitholes in the world, I very seriously considered it but I don't wanna get the rona.

With a balcony and a beautiful ocean view, indeed.
