So, after many of you asked, begged, pleaded, and threatened to ban me so I would post some pictures of Djibouti and other places on my deployment to Africa, I will use this thread to do just that. So hold on to your hats and without further ado, Welcome to Don King's African Photo Journey!

(Disclaimer: Nothing is military related due to Operational Security reasons, so no cool Army stuff. Oh, and please forgive me as photographer, I have a crappy camera and most pics were taken from a moving vehicle.)

EDIT: All pictures were taken with either my Fujifilm FinePix Z33WP or my Nikon D3100 with Nikon Nikkor DX AF-S 18-55mm lens, OR my Samsung Galaxy SIII phone camera.

Some donkeys being used to transport water.

Local Djiboutian police.

Really nasty beach where people actually go to relieve themselves/wash up in the same place.

A more modern view of Djibouti City. It is a clash of wealth and abject poverty everywhere here.

The city is a lot greener than I expected it to be.

Part of a little market area they have.

Traffic is ridiculous. No one has a license, and there are no enforceable traffic laws.

Apparently, they like to bowl. And Coca Cola. There are adverts for that EVERYWHERE!

A small part of the National Themepark. Which is closed down btw...

A really deep (can't tell it too much in the pic) dry riverbed canyon about an hour outside of the city.

A view of the highland countryside.

CAMEL!!!

There will be MUCH MORE to follow throughout the deployment. Hope you all enjoyed  the pics thus far!

Camel! lol

Good stuff Witchdoctor, I always like looking at the infrastructure of lesser-known countries.
It doesn't look all that different from anywhere else (in 'the West') at a glance, and then you see donkeys carrying water alonside a railroad track. I think a "clash of wealth and abject poverty" put it well.

Thanks for the pics! Look forward to more.

Some of it looks like rural Mexico.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Ready for round two of Don King's Amazing African Photo Journey? Well... wait no longer!

Some Local Djiboutians

Very wealthy household. Probably foreign contractors or diplomats.

Junk shack. Note the difference from the pic before. Here, the have's have everything, and the have not's have nothing.

Another pic of the Djiboutian Grand Canyon

A typical sun-baked village well outside the more cosmopolitan capital city.

Another rich person's home in Djibouti City, the capital. Note how this one shows a lot of greenery.

A casino in the capital city. Again notice greenery. Djibouti is one of the most arid countries in the world. To make things grow, people spend outrageous amounts of money to acquire enough water to have gardens, etc.

An old French redoubt and abutment, probably dating back to pre-WW1 colonial French Somaliland

Brahmin, the local steak factories.

A woman walking in open desert with her kids.

Driving in the desert desert part of Djibouti.

Another steak factory, I named him Hamburger the Horned

AAAND... that is all for this update. Stay tuned for more!

Look at the rack attached to that bra...
...hmin!

How dare you say the have-nots have nothing - that is a fine shack.
But wow the poverty is insane. And just looking at the landscape makes me want to drink water.

Just curious Doc, but do you know/care to share exactly why you are deployed there right now?
Perhaps this is a silly question you may have already explained >_>

That is why sometimes you have to use lube... oh shit, we weren't talking about that... anyways yes Djibouti is one of the most arid countries in the world, averaging less than or equal to 5in a year of rain. There are no rivers, and there are only 3 lakes, one attached to the Bay of Tadjoura, one that is mostly in Ethiopia, and one that is the most saline body of water in the inhabited world, Lac Assal. Lac Assal is also the world's largest single salt reserve, which is one of Djibouti's biggest industries.

I wish, Air. Actually I am the Medical NCOIC (Non-Commissioned Officer-in-Charge) for the Task Force I deployed with. We do base security and a few other things. You can look up Camp Lemonnier, CJTF-HOA, or AFRICOM for more info.

That makes no sense. Are you implying i'm a cartel member? Still makes no sense because I have never revealed any details of my illegal cartel business, thus, your sentence is invalid.

Well, guess I am reviving a dead topic, but I am too lazy to start a new one. Anywho, to the good stuff... MORE PICTURES!!!

Here is a pic of Lac Assal, the saltiest body of water in the inhabited world!

This is another picture, with a mountain range in the background.

Lac Assal again, but this time you can actually see the salt deposits (the white crust on the shoreline).

Myself overlooking Lake Ghoubet, which is at the end of the Bay of Tadjoura.

A pic of the plateaus and hills surrounding Lake Ghoubet.

A goat! Eating a thornbush!

Myself again, standing on the edge of a small canyon near Lake Ghoubet.

And here is that canyon/gorge thingie.

"Hey, nice ass!"

Some of the shanty houses outside of the capital.

Some kid, who was very very happy, that we gave food and stuff to.

And lastly, another camel. And a sock monkey. Don't ask.

That is all for this installment of Witchdoctor1 Geographic Awesome Cool Adventures in Djibouti (lol he said dya-booty!)

OK, OK... a few more...

Laurabell Bundy, the country artist, visited us. She's hot and put her boobies on meh...  ;D

Air must have come to visit me.

Another baboon.

And baboons again.

Random convoy superman pose.

AAANNDD... no photoblog is complete without your random National Geographic qualifying cool picture.

It is a rather interesting place. I wouldn't recommend it for a vacation (or holiday, for our more English-minded folks) but it is interesting.
