Title: Un-protecting villages

This might sound like a really weird question, but I'm completely serious. Can you unprotect a village area that you own? And if so, would you get a $5K refund (from the money you paid to get it protected in the first place)?

Yes you can unprotect.

It's worth noting that Staff sometimes decide to preserve abandoned/unprotected villages or areas, which we sometimes do for art or general positive improvement of the server.

No, the $5k is not refunded. Though if you find a village that shouldn't have protection status, and we unprotect it, sure you can have $5k, why not.
